In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
