PSG Defeats Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now claimed the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match featuring the French league champions and the French Cup holders after Ousmane Dembele opened the net in the opening stages.

However, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to seize a shock lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood converted from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital equaliser in the final seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving crucial kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty victory.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the 12th time in the last thirteen seasons.
