Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
