European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
