RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
